This contemporary painting features a bright orange sailboat on rough waters during a stormy night. This piece tells a story of a woman's (Jocelyn) dark night and her journey at sea in search of a lighthouse. It represents humanity's trials, hopes, transcendence, and capabilities to overcome life's rough times.
As a spiritual seeker, Jocelyn has learned from her life's journeys to not only count all that is awesome and good in her life as blessings, but to continually look deeper into any long buried wounds hidden beneath the surface as well.
When everything falls apart and dark times arise, they pass like stormy clouds and become moments we get to work on. They show up to help us heal and grow.
Have faith, hope, and believe that you can overcome and transcend all that arrives on your life's path. When you do the real work and have overcome the storm that passes, you'll see that the sky has remained blue and you are destined to a bright good path! :)
About the Artwork
Jocelyn used pallet knives with Acrylic paints to create bold Impasto effects on this piece.
The "Journey to the Lighthouse Collector Series: "Dark Night of the Soul" artwork and this website is dedicated to the loving memory of one of Jocelyn's cherished friends and fellow Alchemist, Frank Gallagher. The Dark Night of the Soul poem has inspired Jocelyn to use it as the title of this artwork's series.
My Dear Air Bud Frank,
This was your favorite artwork and you were always so supportive of my creative dreams! This is for you:
Journey to the Lighthouse: Dark Night of the Soul
Adapted from the "Dark Night of the Soul" poem by St John of the Cross
On a dark night,
I went forth without being observed,
in secret, when none saw me You watched me sail into the rough Seas! The clouds opened and your light guided me Oh night that guided me.
You caressed me in my dark night
Kept wholly for yourself and I was never alone
Your gentle hand reached for mine,
And caused all my senses to be suspended.
Your love burned in my heart.
Oh, night that guided me,
Oh, night more lovely than the dawn,
Oh, night that joined Beloved with lover,
Lover transformed in the Beloved!
I remained, lost in oblivion;
My face I reclined on the Beloved.
All ceased and I abandoned myself,
Leaving my cares forgotten among the lilies.
More surely than the light of noonday
To the place where he was awaiting me
A place where my Soul is now at rest.
With Love Always,
